A brief summary of the history of life coaching and what it can do for you.
“Midway in the journey of our life / I came to myself in a dark wood / for the straight way was lost.” - Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy Do you know what you want? Are you on your way to achieve it? What is your purpose at this point in your life? What is your vision of the next chapter? These are routine questions that I ask my clients when they come to me for their first session of life coaching. Life coaching is an offshoot of psychology that developed in the United States during the nineties. It is a formal method of personal development, goal setting, achievement of objectives, inner growth, and happiness. In 1992 a man named Thomas Leonard founded Coach University and went down in history as the father of life coaching; three years later, the International Coach Federation came into existence. What is a life coach? Unlike a sports coach, a life coach is a trainer for your personal, professional, and organizational life. Essentially, life and relationship coaches help our clients take more control over their lives through a specialized process that involves, among others, the following steps: 1. Self-discovery 2. Clarification of hopes and dreams 3. “Aha!” moments; work on life attitudes 4. Reinforcement of self-esteem and self-confidence 5. Goal setting 6. Actions to achieve established goals Coaching helps you find out where you’re at now and where you want to be, working on your self-esteem and personal growth as you focus on developing your talents and skills.
