Dreaming of success
What everyone who dreams of success should know

From an early age I dreamed of success as a life coach on women’s issues. As a teenager, I was an avid reader of books and magazines on success, personal development, and self-actualization. I have come across many definitions of success and many authors who write on it, among them Anthony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Napoleon Hill, Zig Ziglar, Les Brown, and the list goes on. I often agree with their ideas and principles, but it strikes me as odd that so many thinkers who expound on success so rarely stop to explain how to understand defeat. Why does no one analyze the issue in depth? Is it possible to be successful without ever knowing failure?

That’s why I like the story of American mountain climber Stacy Allison, who at 21 reached the top of Mt. McKinley in Alaska, the highest summit in the United States. However, Stacy had a much greater ambition: the imposing Mt. Everest. On her first attempt at conquering it, she fell short:

“The worst storm in forty years trapped us in a snow cave at 23,500 feet for five days.  Turning back can be the most important yet difficult decision of all, particularly when there is so much pressure to succeed.” Stacy reflects, “If you see yourself as trying to beat the mountain, eventually the mountain will win.  You don’t conquer mountains, you cooperate with them." Stacy returned to Mt. Everest with the Northwest American Everest Expedition.  On September 29, 1988, after twenty-nine days on the mountain, Stacy became the first American woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 29,028 feet. *

Tips for success

•    Your life is your responsibility.
•    There is no success before frustration and work.
•    Details are the thread that runs to your success.
•    Your success is unique; it admits no comparison to others’.
•    Always push yourself beyond your comfort zone.
•    Be persistent and you will find success.

Remember that whatever you want from life, others will also want it. Believe enough in yourself to accept that others also have a right to find success.
