“No, no, no! You’re wrong about all those things. All I’m asking for is that you give me some attention, that you hug me once a day.” Katia’s husband Marcos looks at her puzzled; he doesn’t quite know what to do. They’ve come to see me because their marriage is on rocky straits. After years as a life, marriage, and family coach, I’ve noticed that people walk into a relationship or a marriage like they walk into a job, unaware that it is a great challenge in their personal development. I ask them both: On a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, how would you rate your marriage? She answers, “3;” he says, “5.” That is, in her view there’s a crisis; to him, everything is fine. In cases like Katia’s, coaching can help a relationship in the following ways: • It helps you understand the biological, psychological, and spiritual differences between men and women. • It explains the process “give-receive-give.” • It is another tool to know yourself and your partner better. After the session, Katia and Marcos left my office with the firm purpose of working on the “give-receive-give” process, one step at a time. Moreover, Marcos promised to look at her when they talk and to give her a hug every morning. Wonderful! |
