The importance of a good posture
woodenpostureposeHumans are visual beings. For instance, when we’re shopping, we’ll see garments that don’t particularly draw us in until we see them together on a mannequin, and then we’re quite impressed. But let me ask you this: Have you ever seen a mannequin with the belly all jotting out?

Today I want to discuss an element of image that is often forgotten: good posture.

How to have more of a presence

One of the first steps in personal development and wellbeing is perfecting your posture. To verify its importance, observe the movements of heads of state, CEOs, or international royal families.

On first thought the legs appear to direct your motion; however, it is your head that leads you when you walk and stand. This is addressed in a posture method called the Alexander Technique, one of my favorite areas of my workshops on personal development.

What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique aims to correct a person’s balance and reinforce the body’s natural equilibrium centers. Since most people are born with equilibrium and motion centers intact, the brain knows instinctively how motion should flow.

This technique of physical reeducation helps detect and eliminate excess tension which oftentimes goes unnoticed, but which leads to many pain, posture, balance, and rigidity problems throughout the body.

The head must lead forward and up, guiding the body in all motion, so that it stays in equilibrium without using any more muscular tension than necessary, as in animals.

Benefits of the Alexander Technique

When a girl, a young woman, or an adult undergoes Alexander Technique training, she usually quickly realizes how different she looks. This change has psychological effects: It generates a considerable rise in self-esteem and self-confidence. The way you carry yourself through body language speaks volumes louder than words.

Frederik Mathias Alexander (1869-1956) began teaching his technique in England over a hundred years ago. Today people across numerous disciplines apply it to great success, from artists who need more control of their body for their work, to businessmen and politicians who depend on a serene, collected look and on elegant body language before a demanding audience.
